Shaniwar wada – Haunted fort in Pune

About Shaniwarwada

Shaniwar wada is one of the historical fort in the Pune. It is situated near the Mula-Mutha River in KasbaPeth. The construction of the fort was started in 1730, by the rulers of  Maratha empire, Peshwas. It was the seat of them. Peshwas were the rulers of Maratha Empire, until, they surrender themselves to British that is till 1818. It was named Shaniwar Wada from the Marathi words, Shanivar means Saturday and Wada is a general huge residence complex. It was completely built by Teak and Stone. All the teak and stones were brought from the jungles of junnar(village in pune) and the nearby quarries of chinchwad, which is a town in Pune. The construction was completed in 1732. Later on,Peshwas made several additions including the fortification walls with bastions and gates court halls and other buildings, fountains and reservoirs. Currently,fortification wall has five gateways and nine bastion towers, enclosing a garden complex with the foundations of the original buildings.
It is said that full moon nights are very much haunted in Shaniwarwada. There is a story behind this, according to an old story this fort  is haunted by a prince.He was assassinated brutally, when he was 13 by the order of one of his relative. His assassins chased him all across the fort, the boy started yelling again and again, “Kaka, mala vachva!”(Marathi Waord means – Uncle, save me!) and even today locals say that they hear his cries for help at midnight on every new moon day. The fort was largely destroyed itself in fire in1828, but, the survived structure are now maintained as a tourist site.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, an extraordinary example of Victorian Gothic Style of Architecture

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is i.e. CST is a very renowned railway station of Mumbai; it has got a very beautiful historical architecture which remind us a Victorian gothic style of architecture. It was built in 1888, located in the heart of Mumbai city. It also has been declared as a ‘World Heritage Site’ in 2004 by UNESCO. The station is reminder of great British raj pre-independence which is still a historical landmark in Mumbai.
CST shows the output of the industrial revolution technology that includes the beautiful Victorian style with a little enormous Italian model. Apart from this style of architecture it is also showing some shades of Mughal-Style architecture. It also symbolizes the British Commonwealth. It’s an outstanding example of the late 19th century. CST has been witnessing all the development of city, booming of film industry, flourishing of all Mumbai all these moments has lived by the CST.
 History
The CST was built by British architect F.W. Stevens who named it as a ‘Victoria Terminus’. As it has built in gothic style It was labeled as ‘Gothic City’ which now has become a symbol of Mumbai (Bombay). It is the hub of many mercantile activities and is a beautiful mixture of British and Indian Design. The station got its name from royal, Queen Victoria. It took ten years to complete the construction of CST.   At that time it was the most expensive structure of the Mumbai with 260,000 pounds. In 1996 it was renamed as ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus’ by Suresh Kalmadi who was the minister of railways at that time.
 Architecture Style
The architecture of the CST reflects the Victorian gothic style including the designs from late19th century. The main entrance of the CST is edged by the lion figures and tigers that represent the two countries India and Great Britain. Whole structure is made by the limestone and sandstone while the interior of the station is by the High Quality of Italian marbles. It has 18 railway lines and also houses the main headquarters, grosteques, Star Chamber and the North wing.

Haji Ali Dargah - Tomb of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari

Haji Ali Dargah is the complex housing the tomb of the Muslim Saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari (R.A.). Along with the tomb, there is also a Masjid at Haji Ali. This monument has been sentinel to the shores of Mumbai since a long time.

The Dargah was constructed in 1431 in the memory of Muslim Merchant Sayed peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. He gave up all his worldly possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca.

On Thursdays and Fridays, the shrine is visited by at least 40,000 pilgrims. Irrespective of faith and religion, people visit the dargah to get the blessings of the legendary saint. Sometimes, especially on Fridays, people may find various Sufi musicians performing a form of devotional music called Qawwli at the dargah.

The accessibility to the dargah is very much dependent on the tides. As, the causeway is not bound by railings, when the causeway gets submerged during the tides high tides it becomes inaccessible. Therefore, the dargah is accessible only during low tide. This walk on the causeway, with the sea on both sides, is one of the highlights of a trip to the shrine. During the high tide, the dargah seems completely isolated with no access. It looks more like a little island.
